The Rise of Tunisia’sIslamic Party

Rachid Ghannouchi, head of Islamic party Ennahda, speaks with TRENDS aboutTunisia’s future and its upcoming elections.



How do you assess the current situation in Tunisia?

As you know, after the revolution, Tunisia is in a difficult transitional phase. There is a fallen system and another yet to be drawn. The elections of the Constituent Assembly on October 23 will make the transition to democracy and ensure the objectives of the revolution.

You speak of another power …What is it?

The government is a mixture of old and some renewal. This system is unstable. It is the continuity of the old regime with some adjustments. Tunisians realized that this is not what they made the revolution for. They need another system that is based on the legitimacy of the election and with foundations based on ensuring balance and social justice to put an end to corruption.

How do you see the future of the financial system?

In terms of management of the country’s economic situation, we have drawn a program which is being finalized and we will announce it before the elections. More than 100 economic experts, engineers, university and Tunisian businessmen are looking at this program. The latter is a mixture between market economy
