Talk to the Boss

Today, it seems inconceivable that the outgoing US President, or his Democrat or Republican successor, even seriously ponders the military option. An increasing number of Americans question the wisdom of the so-called “global war on terror.” Meanwhile, concerns about how to rebound from the current financial crisis have eclipsed any war-making plans. The “diplomatic option” has become the leitmotiv of the administration’s rhetoric.
The Jerusalem factor. Quite a few Israeli officials – particularly Iranian-born Shaul Mofaz – have indicated that a preventive strike like the one that destroyed the Iraqi Osirak facility in 1981, is either “desirable” or “inevitable.” But there are reports that Washington refused to upgrade Israel’s capabilities to attack Iran, including with bunker-buster bombs (although some sources have contradicted this) and advanced refuelling tankers.
